Mobile internet usage is continuing to rise in France, with smartphones and devices such as the iPad driving this process. Research firm Médiamétrie-eStat estimated98% of website visits were drawn from computers - be it desktops, laptops or netbooks - in September 2010. Microsoft's Windows operating system contributed 91% of this figure, down 2% on January 2010, with Apple's Mac equivalent up 1% to 6% over the same period. The number of hits recorded via mobile phones has climbed 52% since January, boosted by the iPhone's 1.2m visits and a corresponding 1m rating delivered through handsets using Google Android, which is enjoying rapid growth.
Total traffic levels attributable to cellphones have grown by 0.5% during the last eight months, the study said. The iPad generated a 0.15% proportion of September's online activity, with the iPod Touch on 0.13%, giving Apple a 7.2% share across all channels, an increase from 6.3% in June and 5.5% in January.
