19.1.2011 Unilever chief to warn over global crisis in food output

Unilever's chief executive Paul Polman is expected to announce that the global crisis in food production is leading to dangerous rises in food prices. Polman will deliver a speech to the seven City Livery Companies: the Worshipful Companies of Bakers; Butchers; Cooks; Farmers; Fishmongers; Fruiterers; and Poulters, at the Guildhall 18 January.

In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, Polman said he will address the issue of market distortions made through European Union subsidies and how they work against the needs of the developing world. Polman is also expected to say that Unilever will review its tomato cultivation in Greece and Spain and investigate how sustainable it really is, and tackle the possibility of inadequate water supplies in the next decade. In November, Unilever announced a plan to halve the carbon footprint of its productsand source all agricultural raw materials sustainably within 10 years.
