04.10.2010 Facebook film tops US box office

'The Social Network' has topped box office charts in the US in its opening weekend, with $23m in ticket sales, according to an estimate by its distributor Sony Pictures. The film, about the rise of Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerburg, and directed by David Fincher, opens in Europe on 15 October. So far, the film has attracted a positive reception from critics. Peter Travers, in Rolling Stone, wrote: "Bracingly smart, brutally funny and acted to perfection without exception, 'The Social Network' lights up a dim movie sky with flares of startling brilliance."

Roger Ebert, in the Chicago Sun-Times, wrote: "'The Social Network' is a great film not because of its dazzling style or visual cleverness, but because it is splendidly well-made." The movie’s budget was rumoured to be in the region of $45m to $52m, and Sony is expecting 'The Social Network' to bring in a total of $100m, according to TechCrunch.
