9.9.2010 TV viewing habits start to change in France

Television viewing habits are changing in France, as consumers gravitate to a range of digital services when accessing broadcast content. According to research firm Médiamétrie, 98% of the population aged 15 years old and above still regularly watch TV in the traditional fashion. However, 51.7% of the potential audience – or 26.1 million people – now do so utilising a different medium. Eight million members of this group use a PC, laptop, smartphone or similar device, a pastime particularly favoured by young, digitally literate males.
A further 1.9m viewers stream material through a wireless handset such as the iPhone, up 1.5% year-on-year. Elsewhere, 15.9m individuals play back shows via PVRs, DVDs or video recorders, while 11.1m employ video-on-demand platforms, an increase of 700,000 on 2009. Médiamétrie reported that 23.2m people occasionally watch television somewhere other than at home, typically with friends and relatives, a trend especially pronounced among 15–24 year olds.
